Why Some Gym Gloves Need Hand-Washing
You finish your workout, empty your gym bag, and put your clothes in the wash. Can your gloves go in too?
Sometimes—but check the care label first. Some gym gloves are machine-washable, while others require hand-washing. The difference depends on the complete glove, including its palm, backing, padding, and finishes.
A glove is more than one fabric
The material on the back of your hand may be different from the material touching the equipment. A glove can also contain seams, fasteners, and several layers.
That means a familiar fabric name is not enough to determine how to wash it. “Synthetic” does not automatically mean machine-washable, and a padded glove is not automatically hand-wash only.
The care instructions need to apply to the finished product.
Washing can affect the parts you rely on
Cleaning needs to preserve both fit and the palm surface. In its guidance for football gloves, Nike explains that aggressive washing can affect certain grip materials. That does not establish a rule for every gym glove, but it illustrates why palm construction matters.
For gym gloves specifically, instructions vary: Nike lists hand-washing for its Vapor Elite fitness gloves, while Schiek describes its Model 710 training gloves as machine-washable.
Follow the instructions for your exact pair rather than advice for a similar-looking product.
How a palm is built also changes how a glove feels in the hand, not just how it is cleaned. Thin vs. padded workout gloves covers that side of the decision.
Machine-washable does not mean any cycle
If machine washing is allowed, check the specified temperature and cycle, along with any instructions about detergent, fasteners, or a laundry bag.
Check drying separately. Permission to use a washing machine does not automatically mean permission to use a tumble dryer.
If the label is missing or unclear, ask the manufacturer before choosing a cleaning method.
Make care part of your buying decision
Before buying workout gloves, ask:
- Can I clean them using a routine I will actually follow?
- Are the washing and drying instructions easy to find?
- Can I give them enough time to dry before my next workout?
Comfort matters during training. Straightforward care matters between sessions. If your hands sweat, care sits alongside fit and breathability in the same decision — what to look for in workout gloves for sweaty hands covers the rest of it.
Where HOLD fits
HOLD’s care instruction is machine wash at 30°C or below on a gentle cycle, then hang dry in the shade. Do not bleach, tumble dry, iron or dry clean.
Check that alongside coverage, fit, and palm construction when you are deciding. If anything is unclear, contact us before washing.
